On the bank or offshore?

After the early morning shad spawn ends – and it has been extended by today’s cloud cover – anglers will have to decide whether to stay near the bank and fish shallow or go offshore, where post-spawn bass might be congregating. After practice, there was no consensus on what to do – stay in or go out.

“I think it will be won offshore,” said Dave Lefebre. “I haven’t got a bite out there, but it’s time. Somebody is going to find a little ditch or something. I just feel like somebody is going to do something crazy out there.”

Said Cliff Pace, “I think it’s a coin flip. My vote would be out, but I don’t have any basis for saying that other than it’s just my gut feeling. Fish are really spread out, pattern-wise. I think that’s one of the reasons that fishing is so difficult now.”

Jordan Lee thought shallow would be the winning ticket, saying, “It’s going to be a shallow water tournament. I see shallow water guys that are good at grinding, like Randall Tharp and Jason Christie, doing well here.”

Then there’s Brock Mosley, who has more recent experience on Ross Barnett Reservoir than any other angler in the Elite field.

“It’s going to be a mix, I think, but mostly shallow,” he said. “It’s going to be somebody who won’t get caught up in one deal.”

As the wise man said, “We’ll see.”
