AOY leader Hawk on the board

Today Steve Bowman and I assigned ourselves to follow current Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year leader Roy Hawk. The Arizona rookie finished second at Lake Martin and third at Grand Lake. Have we ever seen a better rookie start on the Elite Series? Not in my seven seasons. I want to get Steve Wright’s opinion later on the earlier years.

Last night I asked Hawk how it feels to be leading AOY. “I’m feeling really blessed,” he said. “Now I just need to catch some fish.”

The Arizona angler has two largemouth bass in his livewell for about 4 pounds. He also caught a big catfish. “Are we going to fry this one up for dinner?” he said.

Hawk told us he only caught five keepers in three days of practice. In other words, he was feeling decent today about having two keepers by 8 a.m.
