18 will make the Championship

The goal for teams competing in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops, is to make the College Championship, which takes place August 10-12 on Lake Bemidgi in Minnesota.

The top 18 from the College Wild Card will qualify for the Championship. The cut today is the top 20. But we may have more teams fishing on Saturday. There four teams here who have already qualified for the Championship. So why are they fishing this week? Typically they would be local teams, or teams already nearby, who wanted to fish the Wild Card for fun.

If some of the already qualified schools make the top 20, that could bump the field up to as high as 24 for Saturday. The College Wild Card began on Thursday with 127 teams.

We talked with JP Kimbrough about the location of the Championship. He’ll be helping Seth Feider guide on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake this summer. “Bemidji is only 2 hours away,” said Kimbrough. “I really, really, want to fish that one.

So far that looks likely for Kimbrough. He, along with Jared Rascoe of LSU Shreveport, finished Day 1 in first place. They had four fish for about 6 pounds when we left them this morning.
