Ray Scott awarded the last Stetson ever made, presented as part of the Elite Series Dixie Duel.

DECATUR, Ala. — The Bassmasters of North Alabama, in partnership with the Junior Bassmasters of North Alabama, awarded Ray Scott the last Stetson ever made. The gift was presented as a part of the Elite Series Dixie Duel, April 5.

Long-time BASS activist, Don Gowen, acquired the one-of-a-kind hat.

"I've always worn Stetsons and have bought several through eBay," said Gowen. "A fellow I'd done business with before called from St. Louis and offered me another one. It was the last Stetson ever made, in June 2004. It carries official company engraving that proves its authenticity.

"The hat — a 6X Beaver, fawn colored — was sized 7 5/8. I knew that was perfect for Ray. I bought it on the spot. I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather see wearing it. It was as if it was made for him."

Scott, whose love of Stetsons is well-known, was overwhelmed. When he returned home, he sent Gowen and the other club members the following note:

"Thank you and your club members so much for the Stetson hat. In my 41 years with BASS, I have never been so greatly honored as I was by you and your North Alabama fishing club members."
