Golub, Stemples win New York junior championship

Rein Golub and Colton Stemples won the New York Junior Bassmaster State Championship, May 31, on Onondaga Lake.

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. — Rein Golub and Colton Stemples won the New York Junior Bassmaster State Championship, May 31, on Onondaga Lake.

Golub, a member of the Rochester Junior Bassmasters, won the 7- to 10-year-old age division with 13 pounds, 2 ounces. Behind him were Baily Friot of the Northern New York Junior Bassmasters with 11-11 and Marcus Wilson of Southern Tier Junior Bassmasters with 6-14.

Stemples, who won in the 11- to 14-year-olds group, hails from the Northern New York Junior Bassmasters. He finished with 12 pounds, 7 ounces. Behind him were Kailey House, also of the Northern New York club, with 12-5, and Matthew Arndt of the Port City Junior Bassmasters with 10-13.

The young anglers fished in heavy rain. They weighed their fish at the boat with handheld scales and immediately returned them to the water because the catch-and-release season dictated they couldn’t bring them in for a weigh-in.

Thanks to their victory on Onondaga, Golub and Stemples qualified for the 2015 B.A.S.S. Nation Junior Bassmaster National Championship, July 21-25, on Carroll County Lake in Tennessee.
