Gear Review: Smith’s Fisherman’s Multi-Tool Pliers

What is it?

Smith’s Fisherman’s Multi-Tool Pliers

What sets it apart?

A lot of multi-tools seem more geared toward camping, hiking, hunting, etc., but the Smith’s product incorporates several fisherman-friendly elements. A standard drop point knife blade joins a jig eye punch, hook remover, a knot-tying tool, a diamond-coated file for hook sharpening and a two-sided ruler so we can exaggerate in metric or imperial units. You’ll also find flat head and Phillips head screwdrivers, along with the standard bottle opener.

How do I use it?

From plucking tough hooks from fish’s mouths, to feeding replacement trebles onto those hard baits, the needle nose pliers design makes this a handy tool you could find yourself reaching for several times a day. And don’t dismiss the saw blade as irrelevant to the rod-bending arts — ever had that one little branch that blocks either your vision or your cast? Simple pruning can change everything.

Angler’s insight:

I like sturdy feel of the cast aluminum body and the easy access to tools, all of which are reachable when the pliers are open. Also, the simple, lightweight nylon sheath is a plus because it doesn’t add extra bulk on your belt. You’ll still want to carry braid cutters and split ring pliers, but for all of those routine slicing, tying, tightening and sharpening tasks, Smith’s offers a solid tool that also fits nicely in a tackle bag or console.
