Gear Review: Ribbit Top Toad

Not just your everyday frog, the Top Toad serves double duty.

What is it?

Ribbit Top Toad

What does it do?

Top-water frog intended to entice bass holding tight to cover, or even in open water.

What sets it apart?

The Top Toad has all the features that made the company’s top-selling Ribbit so popular, but with a newly redesigned hollow, collapsible body that is very durable. It works in heavy slop and assorted vegetation, types and wood, but the feet attract attention by accurately imitating a frog “running” across the water. Almost like a buzzbait.

How do I use it?

Heavy-duty braid on a fast baitcaster with a 7.1:1 gear ratio for adequate line pick up attached to an eight-foot heavy rod with a fast action. Attempt to get this lure in the thick slop and slowly “hop” it back to the edge of the grass mat. Then, slowly drag it across the open water between the vegetation and the boat. When a fish eats it, wait until you feel the tension of the fish before setting the hook.

How much?

Editor insight:

Frog fishing really hasn’t evolved much over the years, but the excitement is the same. It is really one of my favorite presentations, and when any kind of lure hits the market that can adequately serve double duty, I’m in. This lure does exactly that. It’ll play in heavy slop, dense vegetation and across the surface of open water.
