I can drive for long periods of time without stopping. I feel like they’re accommodating to fishermen with the bigger, standard, gas tank.”

At home, I do a little work with my cousin, and he has a bobcat and other equipment that we need to pull around. Now with the new braking system, where you can turn up your gain or lower your gain on your Toyota brakes throughout the truck, makes it just so much easier when you’re pulling heavy equipment, your bass boat or your saltwater boat.”

In February, John Crews traveled to Ohio to do a Bassmaster University event. As snow started to fall, John realized he needed to get out before he was stuck. “I drove 300 something miles back home that evening. I’ll venture to say that over 80 percent of that drive was on snow, not on pavement. The truck did fantastic just driving through that snow. It definitely made a believer out of me with the tires in conjunction with the anti-slip traction control system that they have in this truck. It’s really good on unstable surfaces like that. I didn’t feel like my truck was going to be out of control at all, and it wasn’t. And I got home safely.”

“Every Tundra I’ve gotten I have had Britt Myers customize it in some form,” John said. “Lift, stereo, cab, I’ve always customized the vehicles that I’ve had. The Tundra’s are very customizable. You can do a lot of different things with them as far as lift, suspension. There’s a ton of after-market products. To me, that’s the coolest thing about the truck, figuring out what I want to do to the next one.”

For John Crews, bass fishing is about the challenge of the sport and the friends you have on tour. “In the sport of bass fishing, variables change by the minute,” John said. “You’re chasing a fish that’s not held in one place by gravity like an animal would be on the ground. They can make just a little swish of their tail, and they’re 15 – 20 feet down. There’s just so many different variables that can change in bass fishing, that’s one of the things that I like about it, and the other is the friends that I travel with. Ish Monroe and Mike Iaconelli are kinda like my brothers. We have a great time when we’re at the events. We work our butts off, but we enjoy each other’s company. And we’re like family.”

One of John Crews’ favorite truck memories happened in his first Toyota truck. The truck, which had a two-inch lift in the front, was only a few months old, when his wife Sonja reluctantly took it to the grocery store. She carefully parked away from all the other vehicles at the store, but when she came out a car was parked on the right side of the truck. As she drove away, she went over the top of the hood of the car next to the truck and pulled the vehicle a few feet. When Sonja called to tell John she crashed the truck, John could hear his daughter in the background saying, “I think it will be OK. Daddy can just get a new sticker on his truck it will be OK.” There was only minor damage to the truck, but his wife is still paranoid to drive it.

“It has all the room in the world. It’s a short cab, but it’s still huge inside. I can put all of my luggage, all of my tackle inside. It’s amazing how much stuff you can actually put in the vehicle. I can literally pack my whole entire garage and half my house in there and hit the road, and it still has no drag and the gas mileage is just the same,” Bobby Lane said.
For Bobby Lane, being a Toyota Bonus Bucks angler is a no brainer. “From Southern Opens to Bassmaster Classics to the Elite series, you can make money just owning the truck. Even if I wasn’t bass fishing I would still buy a Toyota Tundra, I love them that much. It seems like every year or every other year, you make 5 to 10 thousand dollars just owning your truck. You can look at that and say ‘wow, you know, I made my truck payment just owning my truck,” he said.

“To me bass fishing is one word, but the outdoors is summed up in the whole scheme of bass fishing. I was taught at a young age that the green fish are fun to catch. To enjoy the outdoors as much as we get to is another thing. To look at your surroundings when you’re at a body of water or somewhere and remember that. Because in 2 to 3 years from now the body of water could change, there might be 100 docks where now there’s 100 Cyprus trees. Remember to enjoy the outdoors more than the fishing when you’re out there. If you’re having a bad day on the water you just got to remember you’re out here doing what you absolutely love and the fish aren’t cooperating but you could be sitting behind a desk or working behind a counter making peanuts, and you actually get to enjoy what you do every day and be out in the outdoors. In something that God has created for all of us to enjoy. I think it’s a wonderful sport and I’m 100% glad I get to be a part of it,” Bobby Lane said.

His wife tells the story best: “That Tuesday morning it was pouring down rain, and Jason asked me to marry him that day. I said, ‘Yes, I would marry you in the rain.’ He went off to work wearing his Toyota shirt,” she said. Kris called her best friend’s husband, the Tennessee Wildlife official, and everyone met up on a little island near the Watts Bar Reservoir, where the couple had their first date. When Derek arrived, still in his Toyota shirt, the rain stopped, and they tied the knot.

Jason Forsgren’s love of bass fishing comes from never knowing what will happen with each cast. “It’s just so exhilarating. With every cast you don’t know if you’re going to catch a one pounder or a ten pounder, and then to fight the thing on the boat and land it. You really can’t put words to it to do it justice.”

You can put 8 foot rods in there all day long. The storage in that crew cab, it’s the biggest back seat. I could put a month’s worth of supplies in there and go at it,” Forsgren said.
