Final morning with Combs

Head out on Championship Sunday with Keith Combs as he looks to move up from 5th place on the final day at the Potomac Elite presented by Econo Lodge in hopes of gaining valuable Toyota Angler of the Year points.

Combs started the morning in 5th place and was looking to start strong on the final day.

The action started only 15 to 20 minutes into his morning when the first fish hit his bladed jig.

He fought the fish close to the boat before he tried to swing it.

Combs was off and rolling as he started to catch them quickly after he landed his first.

He put number one in the livewell before Bassmaster LIVE started.

A chunky number two had Combs moving up the leaderboard.

He takes it to the livewell as cameraman Ben Oliver rolls for the TV show.

Combs continued to put on a fish-catching clinic as he hooked up with number three.

His starting area in Occoquan Bay had a great concentration of fish. He was now looking for some kicker sized fish.

His area wasn’t that deep so he was bringing his bladed jig by clumps of grass to initiate strikes.

Combs is a prominent crankbait angler and he said on stage that when grass is present he likes to utilize a bladed jig and fish it like he would a shallow crankbait.

This was keeper number four and it was only his first pass through the area.

It only took a couple more minutes for Combs to hook up on number two with a Strike King Pure Poison.

He fired up his boat and headed back to where he started and planned on making one more pass down the grass flat.

We fired up and followed him and before we got settled and in a good position he hooked up and boated number five.

With a limit in the boat he set his sights on upgrading his bag.

But first he shows the Bassmaster LIVE viewers how well the fish are his bladed jig.

Shortly after putting his fifth in the livewell he hooked up with number six.

This one indeed culled for Combs as he was the first angler to catch a limit on the final day.

After a slight lull in the action he hooked up and battled a fish to the boat.

As he attempts to swing in the fish it comes unbuttoned.

He checks his bait to make sure nothing was wrong with it before making a few more casts.

A little while later Combs had seen enough and was packing up to go to spot number two.

Combs is having a fantastic year as he has 4 Top 12’s, 6 Top 16’s and only one missed cut. He sits in 2nd in the Toyota Angler of the Year battle behind Gerald Swindle.

Combs would end up finishing in 6th place on the final day at the Potomac River.
