Alabama angler Kyle Mabrey killed in auto accident

Kyle Mabrey, a regular competitor on the FLW Tour and veteran of 33 B.A.S.S. events, was killed Sunday night in a traffic accident in his home state of Alabama.

Authorities said Mabrey, 42, was traveling north on Interstate 459 near Bessemer when his sport utility vehicle went off the road and down an embankment between the northbound and southbound lanes. Mabrey, who was towing a boat, was then hit by a train and ejected from his vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene just before midnight.

A winner of more than $288,000 with FLW Outdoors, Mabrey last fished with B.A.S.S. in 2005. His experience in B.A.S.S. events included the Bassmaster Tour and the Opens circuit, where he notched three Top 20 finishes and accumulated more than $62,000 in career earnings.

Mabrey’s highest finish with B.A.S.S. came in 2002 when he placed second in the Alabama Eastern Open on Lake Martin.
