Critical day for Angler of the Year

This is a make-or-break day for the AOY fortunes of Dean Rojas, Justin Lucas and Greg Vinson, especially Lucas and Vinson. After Day 1, Rojas was 49th, Lucas 84th and Vinson 98th. Rojas has been flirting with disaster on Day 1 a couple of times this season, but he's managed to pull it out.

By the way, BASSTrakk showed Rojas with 21 pounds early yesterday. Backstage at the weigh-in, Rojas explained that he had an inexperienced marshal who was punching in the numbers, guesstimating the weight of each bass without consulting Rojas, who actually had 16-6.

Lucas and Vinson, who came into this event in 2nd and 4th places in the AOY standings, respectively, have the biggest hill to climb today, obviously. Lucas had12-9 and Vinson 10-2 yesterday. A 20-pound day would put Lucas near the expected top 50 cut mark. Vinson needs something north of 20 pounds.

If you pay attention to those daily tournament AOY points updates, which I don't – nothing but Sunday's final results ultimately means much, Aaron Martens now has 42-point lead over Rojas. But, again, it's early for all that. It's getting late, however, for Lucas and Vinson.
