One-rod Rook hanging tough

Scott Rook has kept it simple while moving near the top of the leaderboard this week. He's using one rod, hoping to catch 10 pounds a day. He caught 10-9 Thursday, 10-13 Friday and BASSTrakk shows him with 9-7 today.

"I'm fishing isolated cover," Rook said. "These fish are spawning. They're on trees. I'm just going from tree to tree to tree."

Rook can't see the spawners because of the lack of water clarity, but if you know where to put a bait, the muddy water can be advantage.

"It's just like when they're spawning on the (Arkansas River) back home," said Rook, who is from Little Rock. "You know where they're spawning, you know what to catch them on, you just can't see them.

"To me, they're a lot more aggressive when they're spawning in muddy water than they are in clear water where you can see them."

But you have to stay alert if you want to know exactly where these bass are spawning.

"I'm looking ahead," Rook said. "If I see a fish boil, chasing bream (away from a spawning bed), I'll go up there and flip and catch it. I'm just really paying attention to what's going on around me."
