Smallmouth bass of different colors

The two smallmouth bass Jacob Powroznik is holding in this picture are a reflection of the area in which they were caught. The light-colored fish on the left came from a shallow, sandy area in Lake Michigan. The fish on the right came from deeper, rocky structure.

Because Lake Michigan is so clear and it was relatively calm this morning, Powroznik has been able to do some sight-fishing. Of course, it wasn't sight-fishing of the spawning bed variety. But Powroznik has been looking past his sonar screen, directly into the water, which has visibility in many areas down to about 15 feet.

"I can see them, but I can't make them bite," he said earlier today.

Then he started seeing 'em and catching 'em.
