Lane shakes the leader board

Chris Lane just added quality to the livewell with a hefty largemouth. He’s now moved into the lead ahead of Kevin VanDam and Hank Cherry, according to BASSTrakk.

“Late in the day is when I’ve been getting these big bites,” said Lane.

Lane is committed to a topwater bait all day long. It’s a high risk reward kind of pattern that just paid off. The key to Lane’s commitment is staying with the topwater lure when many anglers would have it stowed for the day.

The lure choice is ideal for a couple of reasons. In the morning he’s leveraging the shad spawn. Later in the day he’s using the topwater to mimic bluegill moving into the shallow water to spawn. The replishing food supply provide good reasons for fishing the baitfish imitating lure.

“Another thirty minutes and that fish would be gone,” he added.

That’s likely because the bass are using his areas as transition points between the spawning beds and deeper water.

Lane is fishing creek mouths covered with aquatic vegetation and scattered cypress trees.
