KVD in slow mode

Yesterday after catching 18 pounds for 5th place Kevin VanDam is off to a slow start. He’s doing something un-KVD like on this lake, which is not fish the signature river channel ledges. That’s because it’s too soon for the bass to be out there. Instead, he’s fishing a series of shallow flats bordering a creek channel. An obvious staging point for migrating largemouth coming out of the shallows.

The absence of wind could be one factor. It’s slick calm this morning as opposed to a breeze yesterday. Wind driven current stimulates baitfish activity and feeding bass. Neither are present at this time. One thing is for sure. He’s making short, calculated moves from one flat to the next. The strategy is being in the right place, right time when a wave of bass makes a stop on these flats.
