Flat on Howell

Randy Howell is roaming a wide flat near the main river channel. He’s got plenty of room to fish and probably needs it all. At his request we are giving him space to cover the area. Even 75 yards away our boat is in 3 feet of water. James Overstreet and I don’t see the telltale signs from his rod of topwater action. Looks more like a slow plastic swimbait presentation.

The weather will play a big factor today due to the seasonal activity of the bass. That means spawning transition mode and even subtle environmental changes require tactical adjustments. Right now its overcast with only a slight breeze from the southeast. More of the same is in the forecast. For Howell and others that could mean better topwater action.

The bass are here and its unlikely Howell will give up this spot. He just missed a good bass—twice on the same cast—and Jason Williamson is not far away. Neither is Takahiro Omori. It’s going to be a busy day on the flats.
