Combs knows smallmouth bass

You might not expect it from Keith Combs, who is from Huntington, Texas, but he’s quite familiar with smallmouth bass. In fact, he’s been catching them all his life.

“My best is a 6-4 smallmouth from Texas – Belton Lake,” Combs said yesterday. “I caught four over six pounds when I was a kid.

“I’ve made four or five top 10s on smallmouth fisheries. I like it when I can use my electronics and fish ‘em like that.”

Combs could give Gerald Swindle a run for the AOY title if he got back on the Mille Lacs Lake smallmouth bass like he did a month ago, just before the lake went off-limits.

“I blasted ‘em back then,” Combs said. “I hoped some of that same stuff would be happening, but it’s not at all. You’d catch a hundred fish a day. It was crazy. I can’t catch any doing that same technique now.”

Combs may be starting to figure them out. He’s slowly worked his way up to a limit weighing 14 pounds and is in 35th place according to BASSTrakk. Meanwhile Swindle is still struggling with three fish weighing 8-0 and is in 46th place.
