The scenery is simply amazing here. A lone cypress stands with the morning sun shining down, and one can only wonder if a bass is hanging out in the root system.

Brett Preuett was my boat driver for the day, and this guy can run a boat through skinny bayou waters with ease. His first season on the Elite Series begins in 2016, and judging by the way he runs his Triton/Mercury, he’ll do just fine.

Corey Brant from Minnesota had just landed a fish when we pulled up. Looked to be a pretty good one.

Delaware’s Fabian Rodriguez has a very nice limit of fish, two of which he is trying to wrangle for a quick photo.

If an angler can find a few fish like these to complement a full limit each day, he could win the event. These are very nice bass for this fishery.

Preuett and I head back into the “Horseshoe” area, which is a backwater that happens to be where Connecticut's Paul Mueller won this event last year.

The first angler we come to is Roger Thomas from North Carolina.

We found Jack Barber from West, Texas. He is the Angler of the Year for the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

We found Donald Adcock from Mississippi a couple hundred yards up the bank.
