Edwin Evers’ 5 favorite hard baits

See which hard baits Elite Series pro Edwin Evers is packing in springtime.

"Spring is a time when you need to cover a lot of water," says Edwin Evers, seven-time B.A.S.S. winner. “I rely heavily on hard baits because, by nature, they’re easier to cover water with. A jerkbait, crankbait and topwater are some of the best tools there are to get a feel for what the bass are doing.” Here’s what Edwin Evers is packing in springtime.

5. Megabass Vision 110 FX Tour Premium

“I like this in the sexy French pearl. The Tour Premium has the bill that folds flat so you can throw it 15 percent farther. This is important because in the spring the wind can really blow and the farther you can cast the better off you are,” Evers says. “Plus, it’s got one of the most erratic actions there is.”

4. Megabass Knuckle 60

This squarebill is a bruiser in shallow water, which is why power fishermen like Evers rely on them. “I’ll throw this down riprap banks, around bridges and channel swings and around trees. It’s durable, has good action and is one of the best baits there is for covering water. It’s something I’ve always got tied on.” The bill is adjustable to make the bait run 1 foot deep or 5 feet deep.

3. Megabass X-Dad

“This is a bait that is new in my arsenal, but I’m liking it a lot. It’s a crawfish crankbait that gets deep, and can be twitched. It throws like a rocket and suspends, too. The finish on it is matte, so it really looks like a real crawfish. I can’t wait to throw this on lakes like Table Rock and Bull Shoals,” he says.

2. Megabass Giant Dog X

“This is a great walking topwater that comes into play as soon as the fish are done spawning. It really shines in clear, calm water where you need a little more subdued action from your topwater,” Evers says. He works it around rocky points or around stumps when bass are guarding fry and the water temperature is above 57 degrees. “Like all Megabass baits, the attention to detail on this is marvelous. I’ve found that the action, colors and design of the baits really excel in clear water, which is when bass rely on sight more than any other sense. In other words, they work better than anything in tough fishing conditions; you might say it makes tough fishing less tough.”

1. Megabass Vibration-X

This rattle bait has a few key features that set it apart from other lipless cranks. “As you stop the retrieve, the bait shimmers as it falls. Plus, if you let it hit bottom, it sits on its nose and doesn’t fall over,” Evers says. “It’s one of the best baits to cover water with, too. Also, it’s not just for grassy lakes. I’ve had really good days along riprap on Table Rock with a lipless crankbait. It’s got a tight wiggle and works really well when the water is still cold.”
