VanDam to host benefit tournament

Bass fishing and NASCAR racing fans will get a chance to watch their heroes weigh in fish during the 4th Annual Fish Your Bass Off event, Aug. 15, in Michigan.

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Bass fishing and NASCAR racing fans will get a chance to watch their heroes weigh in fish during the 4th Annual Fish Your Bass Off event, Aug. 15 at Jerry’s Pub and Restaurant near Wamplers Lake.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Kevin VanDam will emcee the weigh-in and compete in the benefit tournament along with NASCAR driver Ryan Newman. The tournament features a pro-am format with 14 teams (two boats per team).

“It is all local fishermen other than the guest personalities,” said BJ Andonian, who helps coordinate the event with Jayme Bicknell of Michigan International Speedway (MIS). “Last year, the locals actually beat [the celebrities], and they were pretty happy about that.”

The tournament runs from noon until 7 p.m., and doors open to the public for the festivities at 5 p.m. Tickets for the festivities that include the weigh-in, dinner and live and silent auctions cost $40 per person. Proceeds from admissions and the auctions benefit MIS Cares, a grant funding program established by the speedway to help local service groups, churches, clubs and other nonprofit organizations earn money for their causes.

“Last year, the tournament raised more than $40,000,” said Bicknell.

Purchase tickets for the event online at  www.mispeedway.com or by phone at 517-592-1109 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
