NEW YORK — Bassmaster Elite Series pro Joe Sancho brought bass fishing to New York City on Sept. 6, when he rode his wrapped boat through the Labor Day Parade.

“People told me it stole the parade,” said Sancho with a laugh. “You had to see the look on everybody’s faces.”

Motorcycles, buses, marching bands and fire trucks made the march up 5th Avenue, but there was only one boat.

“I gotta admit, I was nervous driving my Ranger down 42nd Street,” said Sancho. Not many boats travel the busy streets of Manhattan.

“Several people said they had never seen nothing like that!”

Sancho was representing his union, the I.B.E.W. Local 3, which is also his major sponsor on the Elite Series.

“There were 8,000 of us alone, and Gov. Cuomo spoke, too,” said Sancho. “It was a pretty big deal.”

The parade is for all the trade unions in the city.

Sancho, marching with his fellow electricians, had co-workers from Konsker Electric and family members in the boat with him. His grandson, Kristopher, wore a jersey with Sancho’s name on it and rode along with him.

“It was nice to see bass fishing in NYC,” said Sancho.
