Perrigo wins Alabama qualifier

Shawn Perrigo won a qualifier for the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation championship on Pickwick Lake with more than 22 pounds.

FLORENCE, Ala. — Shawn Perrigo of the Belmont Bass Anglers won the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation Lowrance Regional Qualifying Tournament, June 1, on Alabama's Pickwick Lake.

Perrigo caught 22.44 pounds in the one-day tournament. He caught his fish with a Zoom Brush Hog (green pumpkin) on a Carolina rig fishing shell beds 26 feet deep.

Behind Perrigo in second place was Lee Byrd of the Birmingham Bass Club with 17.93 pounds. In third place was Bobby Boyd of Belgreen Bass Club with 17.01 pounds. Boyd caught the biggest bass of the tournament, too — a 6 1/2-pounder.

The top club in the tournament was the Big River Bassmasters of Muscle Shoals.

After the tournament, the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation announced winners of raffle items, including a beach trip, a shotgun, a Lowrance sonar unit, a MotorGuide trolling motor and a $1,500 gift card.

In all, 159 contestants vied for spots in the state championship, which is scheduled for Oct. 18-19 on Lake Eufaula at Lakepoint Marina.
