Jones Jr. with a Red River giant

At about 10:30 a.m. Alton Jones Jr. caught a giant Red River largemouth, but dollar signs didn’t ring in his ears…rather the sound of points. After barely missing out on a Bassmaster Elite Series invite at Champlain, Jones said on a tough Day 2 that the 6-plus big fish meant he salvaged some points in the standings. He entered the event in 15th in the Central Opens points race and kept the good mojo rolling as he placed sixth after Thursday’s weigh-in.

With 10-11 he was in a prime position to try and notch another Top 12 in an Opens event, but with two fish so far he was a little concerned. Maybe that big fish will help him avoid a bomb event, which is normally what takes an Opens angler out of contention. With the help of the 6-plus pounder he has two fish for approximately has 9 pounds, which was bigger than most limits weighed yesterday.

Three small keepers may get Jones Jr. to Saturday’s final day.
