Jack Orr of Maryville, Tenn., gives his wife all the credit for his winning an official Bassmaster Elite Series Triton bass rig, the grand prize of the BASS 40th Anniversary Gear Up Giveaway sweepstakes at Bassmaster.com.

When I came home last Friday, I saw I had a note from the post office to pick up a registered letter,” Orr said. “I didn’t have any idea what it was about until I opened and read the (prize notification) letter. You talk about being surprised.

“My wife has to take credit for this. All I did was tear an ad for the sweepstakes out of my copy of Bassmaster Magazine. I took it to her at our computer, and I told her she could enter every day. I thought I might win something, maybe even a reel.”

Orr was referring to one of the month-long sweepstakes’ 325 prizes, an Abu Garcia Revo STX reel. Other big prizes included an Exmark Quest riding lawnmower, a Moty-Ko Survivor Kit tool bag and Humminbird electronics unit.

“I didn’t win any of the other prizes, but I’ll take what I got,” Orr said, laughing.

What he got was an official 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series rig with a Toyota Tundra wrap. The colorful yellow-and-black wrap is repeated on the trailer fenders, which cover aluminum wheels. The Triton model 21×2 is equipped with a Mercury 250XS engine, MotorGuide TR109 trolling motor, and two Lowrance electronics units — an LCX-25C and LMS-332C.

A member of BASS for 27 years, Orr said he has been a bass angler “for as long as I can remember,” and that his father taught him how to fish. Now retired from BellSouth, he said nowadays he’s able to get out on the water about twice a week. He most often goes to Tellico Lake near his home in Tennessee, but in the winter he lives and fishes in Florida. He said his largest bass, a 13-pound, 3-ounce largemouth, came from Lake Weohykapka (popularly known as Lake Walk-in-the-Water) near Lake Wales, Fla. He also can claim a trophy smallmouth catch, a 7-pounder that came from Tellico.”I just fish for the fun of it,” he said.

The sweepstakes celebrated BASS’ 40 years of serving anglers. The June contest was open to anyone, BASS member or not. Bassmaster.com received 85 percent more page views in June 2008 as compared to June 2007.
