Gear Review: Do-It Casting Jig Mold

Catching fish on lures you built yourself is very satisfying.

What is it?

Do-It Casting Jig Mold

What does it do?

Matched with the right components, the mold creates a raw swim jig that can become a very effective bass-fishing presentation.

What sets it apart?

The swim jig has become a highly valuable weapon in the bass fanatic’s arsenal. Now you can pour your own and always keep a healthy supply on hand. The mold can make 5/16-, 3/8- and 1/2-ounce jigs. The jig tracks straight and easily swims through wood and rock without getting snagged up.

How do I use it?

Make sure you are practicing safety at all times and using necessary safety gear, such as gloves, safety glasses and a smock. Place a hook in the mold on the desired size, and a weed-guard pin as a temporary placeholder for the weed guard, and pour molten lead into the desired slot. Once the lead has hardened, remove the jig from the mold, trim the excess lead from the top, and let it cool for painting. Once the jig has been painted, remove the weed-guard pin and place the weed guard in the slot with some super glue or epoxy.

How much?

$50.75 (jig only)

Editor insight:

Don’t forget that you’ll need specific hooks and weed guards, but Do-It has done it right by linking to the required components on the same page. They make it easy, which is awesome. If you are the DIY type, there is a lot to be said about catching fish on baits you made yourself—plus it’s a lot of fun! If you haven’t started this venture, I’d recommend it.
