It’s all about the TEAM

On November 2, 2013 BASS High School Nation made its presence known in Texas with the Texas High School Bass Association. A part of B.A.S.S. High School nation over 120 high school bass anglers representing 21 schools fished Lake Fork. The THSBA trail consists of five tournaments that challenge each student as well as provide various angling scenarios. The Association is non-profit and all monies collected as entry fees is used for prizes, plaques and trophies while the other half is used for scholarships which will be awarded at the Regional Championship on March 1-2 on Lake Ray Hubbard and hosted by Bass Pro Shops of Garland Texas and Cowboy Toyota of Mesquite.

This organization is different from other trails that award only Individual teams. The THSBA not only has separate team placing and Angler of the Year points but a concept where every student who competes has a chance to impact the outcome of the Team Championship awarded at every tournament. At THSBA events the bag weights of the top three placing teams of that high school are totaled. The team with the heaviest total weight wins the Championship. Every student who competes understands that she or he may not weigh in a big limit but their weight may be the few ounces that wins the trophy for the school.

In schools today many students are members of athletic teams. They have the ability to run fast, jump high and perform at a high level especially here in Texas. The THSBA understands that some kids may not have the ability to dunk a basketball, hit home runs or be a quarter back, however they can fish, wear their school colors and be a part of a TEAM!

Volunteer boat captains help the student angler during the tournament day in understanding electronics, lure selection and how to read the water to hopefully connect the student with a successful fishing experience and skills that will be passed on. Additionally these students receive the knowledge on how the fishing industry operates by being involved in promotions from their sponsor companies and possibly a chance to fish on a Collegiate Bass Fishing Team. It will be only a matter of time when we see some of these students excel on the next level.
