Skeet scores

After a short run, Steve Bowman and I have found Skeet Reese, who's on a roll after winning the Guntersville Elite earlier this month. Since he lives just 90 minutes away from this part of the Delta -- about two days' drive closer than most of the rest of the field -- he's on almost everybody's fantasy team. We watched him boat his first fish of the day. It measured just over the 12-inch minimum and might weigh a pound, he said. He hopes he'll have a chance to cull the fish before heading back to the weigh-in this afternoon. Soon after that bite, he swung on another fish but couldn't connect.

While competitors in other parts of the Delta may be catching fish, it appears that the area where we're hanging out will not be productive until a couple of hours from now. Most seem to be targeting bedfish, when they can see them. Fishing might be better in other areas because the tide is falling earlier there. We passed through one hot spot on the way here that seemed only a short drive away yet is a half-hour ahead in tidal movement.
