Fish catches coming in rapidly

As the anglers spread out on this long, 19,300-acre lake formed by the Colorado River, the fish catches are coming in rapidly. Dean Rojas, who grew up in San Diego, but moved here in 1998 when he "couldn't afford to live in San Diego any longer," noted that this is where he learned to compete successfully on the Elite Series.

"It's got every type of habitat," Rojas said. "You can fish shallow, dirty water and deep, clear water here. You can pretty much do whatever you want to do."

That includes sight-fishing this week. Skeet Reese, who isn't planning to sight-fish, said there are a lot more fish on spawning beds than he anticipated there would be. Sunday night's full moon may have helped spur another wave of spawners. The water surface temperature is in the low to mid 60s.

Twenty-two fish catches were recorded in the first 40 minutes today. David Mullins leads with two bass totaling 7 pounds.
