Early risers

The first contender to arrive at the Green Pond Events Center launch site on Day 1 of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro was Gerald Swindle -- not because he wanted to get a headstart, but because he had an early interview with The Weather Channel. Reporter Reynolds Wolf interviewed Swindle about the effects of such brutally cold weather on the fish and the fishermen. After the 6 a.m. live interview, Swindle launched his boat and retired to a warm spot for a hot breakfast.

Other Elite Series anglers were on hand as well. Terry Scroggins and Marty Robinson, who missed the Classic-qualifying cut, are serving as on-air analysts and experts for The Weather Channel and other media set up at Green Pond to cover the start of the 45th world championship. I suggested there might be an advantage to being available for these interviews, which bring great exposure for them and their sponsors.

"Yeah, I'm probably getting more coverage than if I had been in the Classic," said Scroggins.

"That's why I missed the cut by 2 points," added Robinson.

Both, of course, are joking. It's killing them not to be on the water, battling the elements and the other Elites.
