Pitching practice

We're witnessing a pitching duel today, and it's not likely to change through the rest of the tournament. No one in sight is casting -- they're all pitching soft plastics into milfoil here on these flats in the north end of Cayuga. Our driver, Jeff Botting of Oswego, N.Y., says they're fishing milfoil beds, trying to hit holes in the grass. He and his fishing buddies typically toss Texas rigged craws in the grass, and they sometimes switch to finesse worms on drop shots and spinning tackle. We're camped near John Crews, and he's pitching with casting gear. He has nothing to show for it so far. In fact, three or four of the Elite anglers who were fishing the area have departed for points to the south.
