The Lone Cranker

In this gaggle of fishermen, all but one are soaking soft plastic baits. The lone crankbait fisherman is Terry "Big Show" Scroggins. He's weaving in and out among the other anglers, heaving and then burning a diving plug over the grass. It's about 15 feet deep here, with weeds rising about 7 feet off the bottom. Scroggins is 35th in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, and he needs a good showing here to ensure an invitation to the Toyota Bassmaster AOY Championship in Michigan next month. He hasn't boated a keeper yet. If he's feeling pressure, he's not showing it. He splashed his bait down just a foot from where Steve Bowman is standing on the front deck of our Skeeter. "I'm not going to hit you!" he said, laughing out loud. Bowman isn't so sure. We heard Crochet tell Scroggins that his two bass will weigh about 5 pounds. Crochet is 16th in AOY right now. Only the Top 50 Elites will move on to the Championship.
