After a long dry spell, Hackney just now boated his Fifth bass. This one appears to be a 2-pounder and should give him a total of 17 pounds and change. He caught the first four bass shortly after settling down off plane but the action slowed considerably after that. He's staying in the shade and has moved closer to shore, where he's working parallel to docks with a fast-moving bait of some sort.
Hackney grabbed a narrow lead in the Angler of they Year race after the Delaware River Elite two weeks ago and would love to widen his margin.
Hackney was fourth after Day 1, just an ounce behind Mark Davis, who led AOY for most of the season. Davis was 33 points behind Hackney at the start of the A.R.E. Elite on Cayuga. Hackney is in command of this situation, but Davis -- a three-time AOY -- is giving it his best.
