Deja Vu on Cayuga

The Bassmaster Elite Series is ending the way it started: The bulk of the field in the A.R.E. Truck Caps Bassmaster Elite on Cayuga Lake is congregated in relatively small areas containing the best weedbeds and the highest concentrations of bass. Steve Bowman and I are staked out a short run from the launch site, where about 15 contenders are sharing a weedy flat. North of us, another clot of anglers is jockeying for positions. If you'll recall, the St. Johns (Florida) Elite featured about 80 of the 110 anglers crisscrossing an eelgrass bed in Lake George, where bass were spawning.

This flat doesn't seem as productive, yet. We've seen two fish catches -- both pickerel. Joe Sancho, a New York angler, just tossed back a 2-foot-long one.

In that Florida Elite, Chris Lane went against the bed-fishing grain and won. Will someone else find success in a secret, secluded spot? We'll soon see.
