"Mark Davis is the king of the postspawn," declared Steve Bowman. "These fish were laying eggs just a few weeks ago, and now they're in the postspawn mode."
Davis appears to be fishing a waypoint along the underwater path bass would take from their shallow spawning grounds to their deeper summertime haunts. He seems to be a contrarian in this event, in which most of the anglers are working summer patterns. And it's paying off in spades.
He is seventh in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, 31 points behind Greg Hackney, who's first in AOY going into this tournament. It might not be possible for Davis to retake the lead with only two events to go, but he's making a good run at it.
