Mark Davis with bowed rod

Photographer James Overstreet and I left Detroit at 4:30 am this morning and drove 2 hours by car to Ohio's Catawba Island to meet with Eric Klotz, our boat driver today. We boated 30 minutes into the middle of Lake Erie and found tournament leader Mark Davis with his spinning rod bowed over. He lands that bass and quickly catches another. Davis tells us they are his first bass of the day. "This is a faster start than he had yesterday," Klotz says. He should know, Klotz was Davis' Marshall yesterday. The sun is lighting up Davis and his wrapped boat. There is a slight breeze from the east and the water is calm. I believe Davis will tie into some monsters before he's through today.
