As Open anglers look for five big bass on the Arkansas River this week, 8-year-old Zaniel Cole has already caught something incredible this week. He caught two very rare species, the shovelnose sturgeon and paddlefish.
Shovelnose sturgeon and paddlefish are distant cousins in the order Acipenseriformes dating back to the time of the dinosaurs, hence the moniker "Primitive Fishes."
Weather, wind and muddy water make the Arkansas River a challenging place to fish. With snow one day and warm weather accompanied by 40 plus mph winds, the Arkansas River has turned into a battle for less muddy water.
