Is there a first-cast curse?

It’s as old as any superstition in a sport riddled with it: You never want to catch a fish on your first cast. It’s a curse on the rest of the day.

When Steve Kennedy caught a 4-pound, 3-ounce smallmouth on his first cast of Day 1 in this Classic Bracket, he failed to catch a 5-bass limit on either Day 1 or Day 2.

Jacob Powroznik caught a 3-pound, 4-ounce keeper on his first cast today, and a 1-2 on his second cast. He may be in the course of disproving two superstitions. The other one is that heavy lightning and thunder, which we had prior to the start, spooks shallow bass.

Powroznik, by the way, is using a 4-inch green-pumpkin V&M Chopstick on his wacky rig.
