Talley is the early Day 2 leader

Frank Talley took the early lead in the Day 2 weigh-in at Lake St. Clair with a 22-pound, 10-ounce bag. It was the way early lead. The lower unit on Talley’s outboard motor was in the process of going out, so he limped in early to get it repaired for tomorrow.

Talley won’t be the leader at the end of the day, but he’s going to be high in the standings. He started in 21st place after catching 19-10 yesterday. His big bass Friday was a 5-5.

“I got off to a fast start this morning,” Talley said. “I had a limit in 45 minutes. I’m fishing what I call rogue fish – just single fish that are shallower than the rest of these fish. There’s not a lot of them. I caught seven yesterday and seven today.”

Talley is relying on two lures: a Strike King 2.5 square-billed crankbait and a Strike King 3/4-ounce Red Eye Shad. “I’m burning them as fast as I can on an 8.3:1 Lew’s reel,” Talley said. “When they hit it, it’ll send chills down your spine.”

Talley will have chills down his spine, as will the rest of his family, if he qualifies for the 2021 Bassmaster Classic in his home state of Texas. He’s on track to do that now, after starting the year with a 65th-place finish at the St. Johns River. He’s been no lower than 38th since then and posted his best finish of the season – 25th – at Lake Champlain. Talley was 40th in the AOY standings after Champlain, and he’s probably going to move up significantly after this one.
