Pickerel get in the way, but they're a cool fish
You'll hear a lot this week about anglers catching chain pickerel from Cayuga Lake when they'd much rather be catching bass that will help them toward their goal of winning $100,000.
Anyone can understand that.
But let's not forget pickerel are considered a valuable game fish up here. There's a state limit of five per person with a 15-inch minimum length limit, and a lot of people eat them - even though their bones require a little extra care during the cleaning process.
Besides that, they're also a really cool fish.
They're called "chain" pickerel because the markings on their sides kind of resemble a linked chain. They've also got a mouth full of sharp teeth - which makes them hard to handle, but all the more cool.
