Hudnall’s game plan

Andy Crawford is once again with fellow Louisianian Derek Hudnall, who is back at it with his weightless, wacky-rigged Missile Baits “The 48” worm.

He just boated a 4-pounder that went into the livewell. Earlier, Hudnall fished the train trestle that crosses Upper Santee Swamp. He focused on one sweet spot without any luck.

Now, he’s moved on to the cypress forest where he spent all day yesterday. Hudnall favors this area, not surprisingly, because he says it resembles the Henderson Swamp in the Atchafalaya Basin in his home state.

Hudnall is skipping the wacky rig beneath the branches, aiming for the base of the tree so the lure falls vertically into the root system. If he falls short, the bait is retrieved back and fired again for improved accuracy.

“I have to hit them on the head, and when I do, it’s in the strike zone,” he said. “The low light conditions of today will make it more difficult, but I’m staying here and grinding it out.”
