Hackney fishing in a minefield

AOY leader Greg Hackney is fishing way up the Elk River. For an average bass boat the journey, from takeoff in Decatur to Hackney’s first spot here, would take at least an hour. Maybe 75 minutes. But Hackney got here in 40 minutes. The water level is high now, into the bushes, and the river is littered with debris, including lots of big timber, partially submerged. Recent storms in the area have contributed. We had to carefully zigzag our way through this minefield. Hackney has two bass in his livewell for about 4 and a half pounds. He’s been fishing this area all week. My take is Hackney likes to get away from the crowds. And this spot certainly fits that bill. He told us some other Elites have fished in the area this week, but that none were doing the same thing.

Hackney started Championship Sunday in 6th place, with 46-9. That’s 14 pounds behind the leader. It would be nearly impossible for him to win this tournament, but he can pick up more valuable AOY points with a strong showing. We asked him what his goal is today. “I’m just out having fun,” he replied. “I’d really like to catch a big one.”
