Feider hittin’ the party circuit

Seth Feider is catching fish on what are typically party spots this time of year.

“The places I’m fishing now are usually sticking out of the water,” Feider said Saturday. “People pull up on them, park their boats and party. But the water is so high right now there is a little bit of flow coming over them.

“The water that is draining from the sloughs around here is full of baitfish and crawfish. The (smallmouth bass) are as shallow as they can get. They’re just sitting there waiting.’

Feider was using what he calls a modified Carolina rig when he caught the 4-11 smallmouth bass that tied for big bass honors Saturday. It’s just a scaled down version with a short leader and a light weight, like 3/8ths of an ounce. But he also caught some on a drop shot yesterday, as he discovered what he thought was strictly a low-light bite could be extended into bright sunshine.

“I think when the sun comes up, they just slide out a little deeper,” Feider said. “My water is getting dirtier too. I think that’s helping me. It’s keeping those fish up shallow even when the sun comes out.”
