Canterbury hanging on to AOY

Scott Canterbury is hanging on to the Toyota Angler of the Year lead like a dog hanging onto a bone.

All year long we’ve seen that race go back and forth. Early on Patrick Walters was hanging on, but there was a constant set of challengers bouncing up and then falling off.

The one consistent angler staying close has been Canterbury. He’s been sniffing around in the top 5 all season. After St. Lawrence, he finally made it to the top of the standings and he doesn’t look he wants to give it up.

He actually is holding the number one spot with the biggest points lead of any angler all year long. After Day 1, Canterbury has a 32 point lead on Chris Zaldain, who is actually leading the event. Zaldain can’t make up any points. He has to stay atop and Canterbury needs to drop for any shake up to occur.

Canterbury, though, seems to be putting his foot on the pedal. He’s been swapping the lead in the derby with David Mullins and Jeff Gustafson all morning. Right now he’s ahead of Zaldain, which is a net gain of points for every place he’s rises and Zaldain drops.

With only two events remaining (The Elite at Fort Gibson and the AOY on St. Clair) there’s a lot of things that can happen. But it’s apparent Canterbury is intent on not letting anyone else get close just yet.
