Can Cox lay down the frog rod?

Three of the five bass in John Cox’s 4th-place bag yesterday came on a frog and the other two came when he was flipping grass with a Berkley MaxScent Creature Hawg. But Cox thought he stayed with the frog too much on Day 1.

“If I can get myself to calm down and flip, I can get one of those big ones,” said Cox, who has won two Bassmaster Opens and an FLW Tour event at Chickamauga. “But it’s so hard because you’re just flipping forever. And the frog is so much fun, I just can’t lay it down. The whole time I’m telling myself, you need to flip, you need to flip.”

Cox was asked which particular frog he was using. He fished Lake Guntersville on Monday with a friend, and he said they caught bass better than anyone did in the Elite Series event there two weeks ago.

“I don’t know what brand the frog is,” said Cox, with a laugh. “I went fishing with Alex Davis on Monday, and I cut it off his rod.”

Cox had two bass in the boat by 9 a.m. today. And he caught them flipping.
