Babies and bass

Becky here. It's Thursday and Mike's out on the water fishing, so I'm going to fill in for him. A fellow won a day on the water with him through the USO. They picked today (Thursday, Nov. 11). That's kind of neat isn't it? It's fitting that the USO winner is going out with Mike on Veterans Day. It couldn't be any better.

We just finished the first seminar of The Bass University down in Kissimmee, Fla. It was great. We had a solid attendance of anglers wanting to improve their skills. That’s what we want. I’ve already been getting e-mails from some of the guys saying they want to attend again next year. There’s still three left around the country, so if you haven’t reserved your spot, now’s the time. All you have to do is go to www.thebassuniversity.com.

All this information is second-hand, though. I wasn’t allowed to attend. My husband wants me to stay in the office because I’m pregnant. And when I say pregnant, I mean really pregnant. I didn’t know you could get so big with three months still to go. If this continues, I’m going to end up as big as a barn.

I’m not complaining, though. I’m as happy as I’ve ever been, and so is Mike. We decided we didn’t want to know if the baby’s a girl or a boy. It’s more exciting that way. Besides, we’ll love him or her regardless, so what’s the point?

Mike might see it differently, though. He may be hoping for a boy. I suspect he feels like he’s under siege sometimes. He’s an only child, so he had a lot of contact with his mother. And, he has two daughters already, plus me. It’s all women in his world, except for one uncle. Heck, even our dog is female. Poor guy — ha!

I want to go back to the USO trip for a minute. I know you hear it all the time, but I have to say it again. We owe these guys a lot. Mike — and none of the other guys for that matter — would be bass fishing if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women. I’m really proud that Mike can repay a little of the debt we owe them. I hope they catch 100 fish and that they’re all big ones.

Other than that, things have been pretty normal around here. Mike’s been getting everything ready for the Classic and next year’s Elite Series tournaments. There’s more to all that than a lot of people realize. He has to get his maps together, make sure he has all the right tackle and make arrangements for a hotel or motel. I help as best I can, but most of it falls on him by necessity.

Anyway, he’ll be back next week. I think he’s going to talk about picking winter lures, but don’t hold me to it. You never know with that guy.
