Mueller, Tharp make moves

Feb 23, 2014

About the time the lull in the action hit an all-time low, a boat comes tearing out of Roseberry Creek. It’s Randall Tharp. He makes a big, long loop following the channels that have been cut, but part of his crowd loses him and scatters. They criss-cross back and forth until they’re all headed in a southerly direction and find him. The result was Mueller’s spot being churned up in a big way. Shortly after the ruckus, he picks up the trolling motor and we motor south as well.

Wind is picking up

Feb 23, 2014

The wind is picking up on Guntersville, and we're wondering if this will help or hurt Evers' bite. After fishing a 150-yard stretch of bank for the past 45 minutes, Evers just picked up and moved 200 yards to fish some grass in the middle of this pocket. His body language says that he's starting to feel a bit of concern about how the day is progressing. Of course, he didn't set the world on fire yesterday until a little later in the day. The spectator gallery has dwindled to six boats, and Evers has been around long enough to know that's not a good sign.

Starting spot

Feb 23, 2014

Tharp has moved back to the spot on the main lake where we found him first thing both yesterday and today. At first I thought the move reeked of desperation, the type of place you go to fill out a limit, not win the Bassmaster Classic. Perhaps he's assuming it's been tough for everyone else and a few 3- and 4-pounders will give him enough to squeak by.

DeFoe's battery not an issue

Feb 23, 2014

DeFoe did jump his starter battery to a trolling motor battery so he's good to go.   "User error," he said. "I didn't charge it long enough last night."

Battery Problems for DeFoe?

Feb 23, 2014

DeDoe just went to the back of his boat and opened the hatch to the battery compartment. He was in there for a few minutes fiddling around. It looks like he may have been jumping from one battery to another. He has been checking his livewells frequently. Perhaps his starter battery is giving him trouble. If that's true his depthfinders may not work right either. This could be a serious problem.

Changing?

Feb 23, 2014

Tharp's gallery has dwindled to about a dozen boats plus one jet ski doing donuts just up the creek. We just overheard him tell his cameraman that he plans to stay about another 10 minutes. He's gotten the bites he needed here, but hasn't been able to put them in the boat. Maybe this is a tactic he'll replicate elsewhere, or maybe he'll go back to the lures and places that got him to this point.

Evers catches two more, but no help

Feb 23, 2014

Evers has landed two fish in a matter of minutes, but neither helped the cause. I can't say if he's losing faith in this area, but I can report that he's losing spectators. The gallery is down to 10 boats.

Day 3 with Tharp

Lee lands another

Feb 23, 2014

Jordan just landed another one, but the 2 pounder won't help him. It's the second bass we've seen during the Classic that was tagged for research purposes.
