Gearing Up for the Classic

Feb 12, 2009

The Classic is only a few days away. I'm on my way to Scott Rook's and from there I'll head to the Red River with my new boat. This is an exciting time of the year for me. I love fishing the Classic, and I love getting a new boat.

Happiness is the Right Truck

I've been busy lately. I'm working on this from Chicago while I'm headed home. My new boat's waiting for me at my brother's place. I'll pick it up on my way home from the airport. Then I need to get it packed for the Classic and the first couple of Elite Series tournaments.

An Industry Diagnosis

I just returned from the boat show at Richmond and was it ever an uplifting experience. The crowds were good and the interest in competitive fishing was high. I think that says something about our sport.

Christmas VanDam Style

Dec 12, 2008

Last week we started doing our Christmas shopping. Christmas is a big deal at our house. We like to make it a family celebration with lots of emphasis on our relationships with each other and a recognition of how fortunate we are.

Trends and Travel

I'm putting this one together in the airport in California. The plane's broke. I've been sitting here for about seven hours. Have you ever noticed that planes break on the way home when you want to see your family?

Opening Day is now a memory. I had a good time out in the woods hunting but the day belonged to the deer. I saw several good bucks and have seen several more since then, but haven't had a good shot.

The Lure of Hunting

Nov 17, 2008

I've been deer hunting with the boys over the last week and have we ever had a good time. There's nothing as much fun as deer hunting with a bow, especially when you can do it with your kids.

The Hunt is On

This one's going to be short. I've been on the road for a few weeks, so I'm spending some time with my family and trying to do a little deer hunting.

Watch and Learn

Oct 15, 2008

My job was to do TV coverage of the tournament from an expert's point of view, expert analysis is what they call it. They wanted me to analyze patterns and fishing trends so that our viewers had a better understanding of the tournament in real time as it unfolded.

Another Side of the Sport

Oct 13, 2008

I'm in the middle of a weird experience this week. It's really strange. I'm doing TV commentary for the PAA (Professional Angler's Association) Corporate Cup tournament on Pickwick Lake. My job is to provide expert, real-time commentary on what's going on and help our audience understand the tournament as it's unfolding.
