It seems that the entire country is in a major drought right now, and Michigan is no exception.
I just spent a few days with the family kickin’ back at Torch Lake near Traverse City, Mich., a place where the smallmouth grow big and keep you on edge. It was a laid-back family vacation but I still had Oneida on my mind.
Faster doesn’t always mean better when choosing a baitcast reel.
Let me tell you right now that Lake St. Clair is the best smallmouth fishery on the planet. I’m amazed at how the lake gets better each year.
I’ve always preferred larger spinning reels than most anglers. While the majority use the “30” size for their finesse fishing, I’ve leaned toward Quantum’s “40” size for most of my spinning tackle applications.

Strike King is one of the few lure companies that puts prototype lures in the hands of their pro staff for testing before releasing them to the public.
I’ve been fishing for smallmouth bass for 30-plus years, yet I’m amazed how they can have different, little idiosyncrasies within the same region. The weather in Green Bay also threw us a surprise.
Man, am I looking forward to the next couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to spending Fourth of July with family and friends, and after that, I'll be headed to ICAST.
Man, these Wisconsin fans are something else. On Day One of the Mississippi River Rumble in La Crosse, the people turned out in droves. Next week we visit Green Bay, a venue I was disappointed to learn has seriously restricted the waters we can fish for the Elite event.
