Angler updates: Clunn, Crews and Jones

Mar 23, 2013

We left Rick Clunn because he’s not doing a whole lot. You can only watch someone sit and chat with his Marshal and eat a sandwich for so long. He’s pretty much done for the day. Alton Jones is getting closer to him, so Clunn’s trolling around his area. John Crews has got a 3-pounder as his small fish and his biggest is in the 8-pound range.   Sure, Falcon gets hammered mercilessly by guides and tournaments, but it’s still one of the best fisheries there is. As the tournament has progressed, the weights haven’t gotten any smaller.

Tietje gets a big bite

Mar 23, 2013

Tietje caught one that allowed him to get over 20. That fish was the third one he's caught off the same tree. All total, a 5 and two 4s have come from the tree.   As soon as that is typed, a 3-pounder hits.   "They are just loaded right here," he said. "Every time I come by here, I get bit by a big one."

Dennis Tietje's spirits are high

Mar 23, 2013

We've slipped over to Dennis Tietje. He has a limit at 18 pounds.  In a short time we've watched him miss one and lose two. But his spirits are high.   Either one of those lost fish would have put him over 20.

Clunn biding his time, protecting his water

Mar 23, 2013

Rick Clunn is biding his time. He might also be protecting his water. As each boat passes, he glances over his shoulder. He’s lobbing a Luck “E” Strike Freak deep-diving crankbait around some trees near the launch. Alton Jones is nearby and isn’t on the same caliber fish that Clunn is, but John Crews is about a half-mile south of Clunn, and he is catching the same class of fish. If the weather reports are correct, the water down by the dam will be nearly unfishable with winds in the 30-mph range. This would mean that Prince and Combs could be washed out.

Nobody is home

Mar 23, 2013

We pull up to the dam and only locals are there. Boat driver says it was full this morning. The Elites have moved to midlake. We passed Faircloth and have stopped on Morizo.  He just lost a 7- to 9-pounder two minutes ago.

Two flips

Mar 23, 2013

Crochet is still stuck on three. And his pace is still slow and steady.   He just reminded us: "You have to remember I'm just two flips away from a giant bag."   Since he's said that 5 minutes ago he's made many dozens more flips with nothing to show for it.
