Mike McClelland needs to cull

Aug 8, 2013

As with every other pro we've found, Mike McClelland is drop shot fishing with spinning tackle. He has a few 4-pound smallmouths in the box, but needs to cull a few smaller bass.   He has 15 or 16 pounds.

Power Drop-Shot Fishing with KVD

Aug 8, 2013

We've been watching KVD drop shot fishing. Unlike the other pros, who leave their baits soaking on the bottom, KVD makes a very short pitch, lets the bait sink to the bottom and gives it only a few hops before reeling in for the next pitch.   Now we're on Scott Rook. He just culled 2 1/2-pound bass with a 3-pounder. Score another smallie for the drop shot.

Chad and Kevin

Aug 8, 2013

Chad Pipkens tells us he has a limit that will go 17 pounds. If he can cull his two smaller bass, he will be a contender.   Not far away we spot Kevin VanDam. As usual, he's in the thick of things for the prestigious Angler of the Year title.   KVD is drop shot fishing. Although he is known for power fishing, KVD also excels with finesse spinning presentations.   "No big ones yet," VanDam says.

Michael Simonton releasing 2-pounders with only three in the box

Aug 8, 2013

Although Michael Simonton has only three fish in his live-well, he has been tossing back 2-pounders. He is concerned that the smaller bass, caught from deep water, will die in his live-well.   BASS does not allow the culling of dead fish. Should a 2-pound bass die in his live-well, Simonton would have to weigh it in.   He sets the hook and battles a headstrong bass. The bass finally succumbs.   "It's 3 1/2 pounds or more," Simonton says. "That'll help."

Ike's working on it

Kevin Hawk's day so far

Aug 8, 2013

Seigo is shooting Kevin Hawk. Our boat is over 60 feet of water. Hawk is fishing a hump that's 25 to 30 feet deep.   "I've got 17 or 18 pounds," Hawk says.   He has culled a number of smallmouths to get that weight. Our boat is now hovering over 70 feet of water and we are very close to Hawk. He is obviously fishing the edge of a sharp drop-off.
